Winter Weather Will Be Knocking on Your Saugerties Business’s Door Before You Know It, Are You Ready?

If you own or operate a business in Ulster County, you’ve probably learned to never underestimate the power of Mother Nature. Most of us remember one horrible winter storm after another, layers of ice that never seem to melt, deep freezes lasting for weeks on end and rock salt and puddles inside your business that you can never seem to get rid of.
Protecting and preparing your business for the winter is as vital as your home. Here are some great tips to help prepare your business for the upcoming winter:
-Check your property for downed tree limbs and branches. Any type of debris that been tossed around, signs or decorations that have become unsecured can be potentially dangerous when winds hit. Weather such as wind, rain, ice and snow can cause all sorts of things to become projectiles which could cause damage to the property and possibly a person.
-Examine the property's walkways and parking lots for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazards, trip/fall hazards like lifted concrete, potholes and cracks and make the needed repairs quickly to keep those areas free and clear (this is a good idea all year long). Adding any snow or ice to those already tricky conditions can lead to far worse and liabilities you can try to avoid.
-Inspect all handrails, doorways and frames, stairwells and entry ways to address and correct potential slippery or dangerous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present. Have this area inspected and cleaned several times a day in the snowy/icy months to avoid rock salt accumulation and hazardous puddles. Make sure any potential leak areas have the water diverted away from foot traffic spots.
-Consult a roofer for an inspection, accumulation of ice, water and snow can make for big water damage problems. You’ll want to look for leaks, tears, missing shingles or holes. Don’t forget about gutters, downspouts and roof drains, keep them free and clear of debris as well. Water damage from the roof can make for a large interruption to service if you have multiple floors of water issues.
The best way to reduce business interruption following a disaster is to plan for it NOW.
